How we use AI in design
AI-assisted tools are useful for exploring ideas. They do not replace design judgement, engineering responsibility or honesty about what a building is.
What we use it for
- Exploring options for form, layout and atmosphere early in a project.
- Preparing visualisations and studies of materials, light and setting.
- Analysis and automation of repetitive tasks, such as checking and organising information.
How we control it
- A designer decides. Every design is developed, tested and approved by qualified people.
- Engineering is checked. Structural, services, fire and code compliance are designed and checked by professionals, not generated.
- We do not mislead. We never present AI-assisted images as photographs of a built building, and we never use them to invent consultation, performance, construction or existing conditions. See Disclaimers and representation of projects.
- We protect information. We do not put clients' confidential information into public AI tools without permission. See Privacy notice.
- We credit and respect rights. We respect other people's intellectual property and credit sources. See Image credits and intellectual property.
Why this matters
Used carefully, AI lets us test more ideas in less time and spend more of that time on the people who will use the building. Used carelessly, it produces confident-looking nonsense. We aim for the first.
