Use

For research and engineering teams who study minerals and develop the equipment used to explore for them: geoscience laboratories, fabrication and assembly halls, prototype and testing areas, secure data rooms and offices, with controlled access and separate logistics routes.

How we designed it

A calm, enclosed stone-clad building with a sharp canopy and a glazed entrance, flanked by louvred wings, sits at the front of a larger working campus. Solar shading, insulated walls and dust-resistant details respond to the desert climate, while secure perimeters protect confidential work.

Corrosion-resistant materials, thermally efficient envelopes and robust services for a demanding environment.

AMTEC

A steep inclined roof, slender steel columns and layers of horizontal bronze-toned louvres shade the glass from the desert sun. Stone terraces, boulders and low planting step the campus into the rock, and the warm metal picks up the colour of the mountains.

Long-span steel and modular laboratories that can be re-planned, and a campus layout that can grow without losing its identity.

NEBU

The masterplan follows the contours of the mountains and separates heavy traffic from people on foot. Steel-framed structures, conveyors, tanks and pipe racks share one consistent detailing, and the buildings that people use are given timber screens, shade and planting.

Robust, serviceable structures for the desert, and a layout that can be extended as the mine develops.
